General Education Program

The General Education Program (GE) at Fujairah University (FU) is strategically designed to embody the university’s vision, mission, and educational philosophy. Serving as an integral foundation within all undergraduate programs, the GE aims to equip students with essential knowledge, skills, and values that foster academic excellence, lifelong learning, and professional readiness amid an increasingly dynamic global landscape.
The program offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary framework that nurtures intellectual growth across critical domains, including language and communication, information technology, innovation,critical and analytical thinking, quantitative reasoning, social and cultural awareness, and scientific literacy. These competencies are vital not only for academic achievement but also for cultivating responsible citizenship, ethical engagement, and adaptability in diverse professional contexts.
The College of Arts and Humanities is responsible for the administration and delivery of the GE courses across all faculties at FU. The curriculum is meticulously curated to ensure consistency, relevance, and alignment with national higher education standards, particularly the Qualifications Framework Emirates (QF Emirates). Each course within the program contributes to a cohesive, skill-based learning experience that transcends disciplinary boundaries and promotes the holistic development of students.
This document has been revised to align with the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) guidelines issued on 13 June 2024, titled “Guidelines on General Education / University Requirements”, effective from the 2024–2025 academic year. These reforms underscore the importance of embedding future-oriented skills, enhancing graduate employability, and supporting national development objectives. The updated GE framework leverages the flexibility granted by the CAA to tailor the program according to the unique academic and disciplinary contexts of FU.

  • Equip students with a broad and integrated foundation of core knowledge, values, and transferable skills essential for academic success, personal development, and professional advancement.

  • Foster students’ leadership, teamwork, and community engagement capabilities to contribute effectively to the economic, cultural, and social progress of the UAE.

  • Develop graduates who are responsible citizens, deeply connected to their national heritage while actively participating in the multicultural and globalized world.

Program Objectives:

The General Education Program (GE) at Fujairah University aims to:

  1. Build a Strong Academic and Intellectual Foundation 

         Provide students with essential knowledge, critical thinking, communication skills in both English and Arabic, and technological competence to support success in their academic, professional, and personal           lives.
     2. Foster Innovation, Ethical Engagement, and Lifelong Learning
         Encourage creativity, responsible use of technology and AI, entrepreneurial thinking, and sustainable practices that prepare students to address complex challenges in a rapidly changing world.

     3. Promote Responsible Citizenship and Global Awareness

         Cultivate an appreciation of UAE society, heritage, and values while preparing students to act as ethical leaders and engaged citizens in multicultural and global contexts.

(GE101) Advanced English Academic Writing and Rhetoric I

This course introduces undergraduate students to the principles and practices of academic writing. It emphasizes accurate grammatical and syntactical structures, the development of unified and coherent paragraphs, and the use of effective pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing strategies. Students will explore rhetorical modes such as description, narration, and argumentation, progressing from paragraph-level writing to full essays. Attention will also be given to source integration and documentation using APA style. By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse and evaluate texts, and produce well-structured essays that demonstrate critical thinking, clarity of expression, and academic integrity.

(GE102) Advanced English Academic Writing and Rhetoric II

This course builds on the foundations of Advanced English Academic Writing and Rhetoric 1and develops students’ ability to produce advanced academic essays. It emphasizes the five-paragraph essay format, the use of rhetorical patterns to organize ideas, and the development of clear, cohesive arguments. Students will refine their skills in summarizing, paraphrasing, synthesizing, and integrating sources while applying correct citation practices to maintain academic integrity. Through writing workshops, peer review, and individual feedback, students will strengthen their rhetorical awareness, critical thinking, and command of academic style, preparing them for higher-level research and professional communication.

(GE103)UAE Society

This course aims to study the society of the United Arab Emirates, focusing on its general characteristics, main components, geographical location, population distribution and growth, demographic composition, and economic activities. It also addresses family aspects, the family and tribal system, as well as the nature of services provided to society before and after the oil era. In addition, the course examines the role of cultural, educational, and media institutions and the services they provide to Emirati society. Through interactive lectures, discussions, research projects, and presentations in various activities and events, students will gain a deep understanding of all aspects of life in the UAE, fostering loyalty and a strong sense of belonging to the nation.

(GE105) Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI

This course provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the principles and applications of Generative AI. Designed for students with no prior background in the field, this course explores how generative models are reshaping industries across various sectors, including business, medicine, the social sciences, and technology. Through a blend of theoretical understanding and hands-on, non-coding exercises, students will learn to operate and critically evaluate Generative AI tools, analyze their real-world impact, and apply them to solve problems relevant to their chosen field of study. The course places a strong emphasis on the ethical implications of this technology and the responsible development of AI.

(GE106) Introduction to Information Technology (English)

This course introduces students to the core concepts and theories of Information Technology, preparing them for diverse IT roles by integrating theoretical concepts with practical skills. The content of this course covers computer systems, networking, database management with Microsoft Access and Excel, basic programming in Python, web design with HTML5, an introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and ethical and social implications of technology. Students will engage in hands-on labs, assignments, group projects, and case studies to apply their learning and develop problem-solving skills. This interactive approach ensures students gain practical experience and equips them with the expertise needed for various IT careers.

(GE107) Algorithms and Problem Solving

This course aims to provide a solid foundation in problem-solving techniques and an understanding of algorithmic thinking. This introductory course focuses on the fundamental skills of designing and developing algorithms, emphasizing their role in solving computational problems, basics of Python programming, and how to approach and break down problems logically. Through practical exercises and conceptual discussions, students will experience how algorithms are used in various contexts, preparing them to apply these skills in computing and beyond.

This course is designed to improve the basic communication skills of students necessary for effective and efficient communication. The subject aims to equip the students with the appropriate communication skills required in conversations, group discussions, meetings, interviews and presentations, as well as to explore topics on verbal and non-verbal communication.

يدرس الطالب في هذا المساق مفهوم الثقافة الإسلامية، وخصائصها، ومصادرها، وبيان مفهوم العقيدة الإسلامية، وأركانها، وشرح العبادات وآثارها على الفرد والمجتمع، وتحليل القضايا الأخلاقية المختلفة وانعكاساتها على سلوك المسلم، والغزو الفكري (العلمانية، العولمة)، وكيفية مواجهة أخطارها في المجالات المختلفة اقتصاديا واجتماعيا وسياسيا وثقافيا.

يتناول هذا المساق دراسة المجتمعات الإنسانية عموماً ويتناول على وجه الخصوص السمات العامة والمقومات الرئيسة لمجتمع دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، والموقع الجغرافي، والسكان ونموهم والتركيب النوعي والعمومي، وكذلك يتطرق إلى الجانب الاقتصادي والجغرافي للسكان. ويتناول الجوانب الأسرية، والنظام الأسري والقبلي، كما أن المساق يتناول طبيعة الخدمات المقدمة للمجتمع قبل مرحلة النفط وبعدها، إضافة إلى دراسة دور المؤسسات الثقافية والتربوية والإعلامية وما تقدمه من خدمات للمجتمع الإماراتي، والرؤى المستقبلية الداخلية والخارجية لدولة الإمارات.

COM-1113 Academic Writing I (3-0-3)

This course aims at reinforcing the grammar and writing skills for developing essays and other specific writing activities. Students are required to use clear and effective, argumentative prose, with particular emphasis on organization, clarity and coherence when writing essays. Writing skills will include further intermediate-level grammar study focusing on introducing more academic vocabulary.

COM-2123 Academic Writing II (3-0-3)

This course is a continuation of (Academic Writing I). It is designed to provide students with a practical and efficient approach to acquiring the skills, strategies, and knowledge that are necessary for succeeding in content coursework. The course engages students to continue to develop skills in preparation for academic specialization/employment requiring a competent level of communicative ability.

This course is designed to assist the students in developing public speaking skills. The course is organized so as to develop both critical and presentational skills. Introduction to Humanities focuses on the study and appreciation of major forms of artistic expression- visual and performing arts, literature, music and religion of various world cultures. The course explores artistic heritage, values, philosophies, and ideas expressed through a historical perspective from the ancient, middle, to the modern periods.

 HUM-2623مدخل إلى الدراسات الإنسانية (3-0-3)  

يهدف هذا المساق إلى إثراء خبرات الطالب المعرفية حول العلوم الإنسانية من خلال دراسة الحضارة الإنسانية عبر عصورها المختلفة بداية بحضارة عصور ما قبل التاريخ والعصور التاريخية في منطقة الشرق القديم والتعرف على أهم المراكز الحضارية التي قامت في المنطقة. يتم ايضا التعرف على الحضارات التي ازدهرت في العصور الوسطي والتي تتمثل الحضارات الأوربية في العصر الوسيط إثر انهيار الإمبراطورية الرومانية يتعرض المساق أيضا الى عصر النهضة وهو يتناول استيقاظ الدول الأوروبية من سباتها العميق.

This course is designed to familiarize the students with the major moral theories and practice of ethics from the worldview perspective. It introduces students to the ethical theory to apply them to specific classic and contemporary moral problems such as lying, cheating, and establishing ethical business practices, honoring ethical obligations that constitute the basic fabric of everyday moral life cutting across the public and private lives.
